Acetyl bromide is an acyl bromide chemical compound. As is expected, it may be prepared by reaction between phosphorus tribromide and acetic acid:[ii]
- 3 CH3COOH + PBriii → 3 CHiiiCOBr + HthreePOiii
Equally usual for an acid halide, acetyl bromide hydrolyzes quickly in water, forming acetic acid and hydrobromic acrid. Information technology also reacts with alcohols and amines to produce acetate esters and acetamides, respectively.
